Forty Hall is one of England’s finest historic houses set in its own Estate. The 273-acre Grade II listed estate with rare examples of an intact 18th Century Landscape, with an ornamental lake, medieval fishing ponds, streams, a walled garden, pleasure grounds, Georgian and Victorian flora and fauna, lakes, lawns, and meadows. Forty Hall Estate is even home to one of the oldest Cedar of Lebanon trees in England.
The estate parkland contains the archaeological remains of Elsyng Palace and excavations of the site are carried out annually, helping to discover and understand the estate’s past and its occupants.
The Pleasure Grounds are home to our magnificent Cedar of Lebanon tree which is over 300 years old, as well as a lovingly restored historical landscape. Features include a circuitous walk and a ‘viewing mound’ that were first introduced to the estate in the 18th Century.
Our beautiful Walled Garden, boasting an amazing array of plants and flowers has won many awards and is a truly special place for visitors and wildlife which can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.
The natural beauty and heritage of ancient meadows and woodlands, with medieval fishing ponds and meandering streams, makes it hard to believe this incredible scenery is in fact in London and not the English countryside. In summer Holly Blue butterflies flit amongst the long grass and if you are lucky you may catch a flash of turquoise as the kingfishers dart along Turkey Brook. Come and take a stroll and admire this historically rich landscape.
Stroll around the picturesque grounds, take a walk through the woodlands or follow the heritage trail, these are just a few of the things you can enjoy. For our young visitors there is Rip’s Outdoor Trail or the wooded play area that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
